Sycamore Tree Allergies: Causes, Symptoms & Relief Tips

Yes, sycamores can make you sneeze, cough and wheeze. But they do it in two different ways. One is a true pollen allergy driven by your immune system. The other is mechanical irritation from microscopic leaf hairs. The two have different timing, different symptoms and partly different fixes.

Most articles on this topic cover only the first one. That is why so many people test negative for tree pollen and still feel scratchy every time they walk under a row of street sycamores. This guide separates the two problems and tells you what the evidence supports for each.

First, which "sycamore" do you mean?

The name is used for three unrelated trees, and only two of them belong in an allergy article about pollen.

  • Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore) is the native tree of eastern and central US river bottoms and floodplains. It is also planted in yards and parks.
  • Platanus × acerifolia (London plane) is a hybrid and the tree you see lining city streets. Cultivars such as 'Bloodgood', 'Liberty' and 'Columbia' are London planes, not American sycamores, even when a nursery tag says "sycamore." Platanus racemosa (California sycamore) fills the same role in the West.
  • Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore maple) is a maple, in the soapberry family, and is what British speakers usually mean by "sycamore." It is largely insect-pollinated, so its allergy profile is different and generally milder than a plane tree's. If you are in the UK and blaming "sycamore," the tree bothering you is more likely a London plane.

Two problems, not one

Here is the distinction almost nobody in this niche makes clearly.

You can have one, the other, or both. A negative skin prick test to plane tree pollen does not mean the tree is innocent.

When sycamore pollen is in the air

Sycamores are wind-pollinated. The grains are small and travel well, so the tree causing your symptoms may not be the one on your street.

The Missouri Botanical Garden puts flowering for Platanus occidentalis in April, with the small greenish-yellow male clusters and the reddish female clusters appearing on the same tree. In the UK, where the London plane is heavily planted, clinicians generally put the peak from mid-April into early May, sometimes starting in March after a mild winter.

Do not treat any of those as a fixed date for your area. Tree pollen phenology shifts with latitude and with the weather that year. Along the Gulf Coast the season can open weeks earlier than in the upper Midwest or New England, and a warm February pulls the whole curve forward. Give yourself a window of several weeks rather than a date.

The practical move is to stop guessing and read your own air. The AAAAI runs the National Allergy Bureau, a network of certified counting stations that report actual measured pollen levels by station. Find the one nearest you and watch it for two seasons. That tells you more about your personal timing than any national calendar.

How strong an allergen is sycamore pollen?

Stronger than its reputation, particularly in cities with a lot of street planes.

A multicenter study published in Asia Pacific Allergy in 2024, run across three regions of Mexico, skin-prick tested 404 adults who already had allergic rhinitis. Sensitization to Platanus occidentalis came out at 20.8% overall (95% CI 17.1–25.0%). Note what that number is and is not: it is the share of people who already had allergic rhinitis and who reacted on a skin test, not the share of the general population with sycamore symptoms.

Spanish work points the same direction. Madrid carries some of the highest airborne plane tree pollen loads on the Iberian Peninsula, and studies out of Barcelona have ranked Platanus among the most frequent pollen sensitizations in that city. Those are dense urban plantings of London plane, which is not the same exposure as one American sycamore at the back of a lot.

At the molecular level, three allergens have been described in plane tree pollen: Pla a 1, Pla a 2 and Pla a 3. In a Madrid patient series, Pla a 2 was the most commonly recognized. Pla a 1 matters diagnostically because its cross-reactivity is largely limited to other trees in the plane family, which makes a positive result a fairly clean marker of genuine plane tree sensitization rather than a spillover from birch or grass.

The other problem: "plane tree cough"

Plane tree leaves and fruit balls are coated in fine, stiff hairs called trichomes. Under magnification they look hooked, which is why they cling instead of clearing. They shed heavily during spring leaf-out and again when the old spherical fruit balls disintegrate.

Inhale them and they lodge in the throat and nasal passages and scratch. The result is a dry, tickling, persistent cough with a scratchy throat and gritty eyes. In London this is well enough known to have a nickname, the "Chelsea cough," because it flares during the spring garden show season.

This is not an allergy. There is no IgE involved, no histamine cascade, and no reason for it to show up on a test. It is closer to what happens when you get fiberglass dust in your airway. That matters practically: antihistamines are aimed at the wrong mechanism and often disappoint here, while a well-fitted mask and rinsing your face and eyes afterward do more.

Be honest about the evidence base, though. Trichome irritation is described consistently by arborists, tree workers and UK allergy clinicians, but it has far less formal research behind it than plane pollen allergy does. Treat it as a well-supported practical observation rather than a settled clinical entity.

Symptoms, and how to tell what you are dealing with

Pollen allergy symptoms look like any other hay fever: sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy and watery eyes, sinus pressure, sometimes cough or wheeze. People with asthma may notice their control slipping during the season.

Trichome irritation is narrower. It is mostly throat and cough, it starts fast when you are close to the trees, and it eases when you leave.

Two clues help you separate them. First, timing: pollen affects you on windy days even far from any tree, while trichome symptoms track proximity, especially during leaf-out or when someone is blowing leaves and debris around. Second, response to medication: if a standard antihistamine takes the edge off, you are probably dealing with pollen.

Neither clue is diagnostic. Testing is.

Cross-reactive foods: what the research actually shows

Some people with plane tree pollen allergy react to certain foods. The mechanism is a shared protein family called lipid transfer proteins. Pla a 3, the LTP in plane pollen, has documented cross-reactivity with LTPs in hazelnut, peach, banana, celery and peanut. The overlap with hazelnut and banana is reported as the strongest, with celery and peanut intermediate.

Two important caveats.

This affects a subset, not everyone. In the Madrid series, Pla a 3 was recognized by a minority of plane-allergic patients. Most people with sycamore pollen allergy eat all of these foods without a problem.

So do not preemptively cut peanuts, hazelnuts or fruit out of your diet because you sneeze in April. Unnecessary food elimination carries real nutritional and quality-of-life costs, and it can complicate later testing. If you get itching or tingling in your mouth after specific fresh foods, write down what and when and bring that list to an allergist. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or any trouble breathing, is an emergency and needs immediate care rather than a food diary.

Getting a diagnosis

Several trees pollinate at once in spring, so self-diagnosis is unreliable. An allergist can use a skin prick test or a blood test for specific IgE, and increasingly can test for individual components such as Pla a 1 and Pla a 3 rather than whole pollen extract. Component testing is what distinguishes real plane tree sensitization from cross-reactivity, and what flags the LTP pattern linked to food reactions.

Bring a symptom log covering at least a few weeks. Dates, weather, where you were, what you did. That context is often worth more than the test result on its own.

Reducing your exposure

  • Track measured pollen counts for your area rather than a generic calendar, and plan outdoor work around them. Counts tend to run higher on warm, dry, breezy days and to drop after rain.
  • Keep windows shut during your peak weeks and run your HVAC instead. The ACAAI notes that HEPA filtration captures the large majority of airborne particles in the relevant size range, which includes pollen.
  • Shower and change clothes after being outside. Pollen rides in on hair and fabric and then sits in your bedroom all night.
  • Wear a well-fitting mask and wrap-around glasses for yard work during leaf-out. This is the single most effective step against trichomes, and it also helps with pollen.
  • Rinse your eyes with sterile saline drops and consider a saline nasal rinse to physically flush out what you inhaled. This works on both mechanisms, since it clears particles regardless of whether your immune system is reacting to them.
  • Do not dry-sweep or leaf-blow sycamore debris on a dry day. You are re-aerosolizing exactly what you are trying to avoid. Wet the area down first.

Treatment options

Over-the-counter antihistamines address sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Intranasal corticosteroid sprays are generally the more effective option for congestion and are widely available without a prescription. Decongestants have a role but are not intended for long-term daily use.

For symptoms that persist despite medication, allergen immunotherapy may be worth discussing. This gradually retrains the immune response and is the only option on this list that changes the underlying sensitization rather than managing symptoms. In the US, the sublingual tablets approved to date cover grass, ragweed and dust mite rather than tree pollens, so tree pollen immunotherapy generally means subcutaneous allergy shots. Your allergist can confirm what is currently available and appropriate for you.

Immunotherapy does nothing for trichome irritation. There is no immune response there to retrain.

The "plant a female sycamore" myth

You will find advice online, and in an earlier version of this article, telling allergy sufferers to plant female sycamore cultivars because female trees produce less pollen.

That advice is impossible to follow. Platanus is monoecious: every single tree carries both male and female flowers on the same trunk. The Missouri Botanical Garden, NC State Extension and the Morton Arboretum all describe it this way. Male clusters form on the previous year's branchlets, female clusters on older wood, and both are on the same individual. There is no such thing as a male sycamore or a female sycamore. No nursery can sell you one, and no cultivar changes this.

So where does the idea come from? It is a real concept applied to the wrong tree.

Horticulturist Thomas Ogren coined the term "botanical sexism" for the practice of preferentially planting male clones of street trees, which produce pollen but no messy fruit. He also created the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale (OPALS), which rates plants from 1 to 10 for allergy potential across roughly 130 criteria, with 1 to 3 counting as low.

The male-versus-female logic genuinely applies to dioecious species, where individual trees are one sex or the other. Red maple, ash, willow, juniper, mulberry and ginkgo are the usual examples, and for those, cultivar choice really does change how much pollen you live next to.

Platanus is not one of them. Neither are several of the biggest urban pollen producers. Researchers who traced airborne pollen in New York City back to source found that most of it came from a handful of genera, and the majority of those were monoecious, which is one reason the "botanical sexism" framing has drawn criticism for being applied far more broadly than the evidence supports. It is a useful idea in a narrow lane.

One note of caution on OPALS itself: you will see specific numbers quoted for plane trees on various sites, and they do not always agree. Plane trees are consistently placed at the high-allergy end, which is the part worth acting on. Treat any precise score you see quoted secondhand with some skepticism.

If you are choosing a shade tree

You cannot buy a low-pollen sycamore. You can buy a different tree.

Insect-pollinated species are the reliable move, because their pollen is heavy and sticky and designed to travel on a bee rather than on the wind. Dogwood, magnolia, crabapple and fringe tree all rate low on the allergy scale for this reason. If you specifically want the fast growth and heavy shade that draws people to sycamores, tulip poplar is a mid-range option worth a look.

The other half of the calculation is distance and prevailing wind. A wind-pollinated tree 60 feet upwind of your bedroom window is a very different proposition from the same tree at the back fence.

Living with a sycamore you already have

Removal is a big step, and sycamores earn their keep for shade, bank stabilization and wildlife. Work through the cheaper options first.

On pruning: the common claim that routine pruning "reduces pollen release" is overstated, but there is a kernel of truth. Male flower clusters form on the previous season's branchlets, so a hard annual pollarding regime, the practice you see on European street planes, does remove flower-bearing wood. That is a serious long-term commitment. It has to start when the tree is young, it must be repeated every year without fail, and it permanently changes the tree's form. It is not something to start on a mature specimen as an allergy fix, and any structural pruning should go through a certified arborist. Our sycamore tree care guide covers general maintenance.

Also be realistic about the ceiling. Pollen travels for miles. Managing your own tree changes your immediate exposure at leaf-out and around the fruit balls, which is where trichomes matter most, but it will not clear the regional pollen load in April.

What is still unclear

A few honest gaps.

Nobody has published good numbers on how many people are affected by trichome irritation, how severe it typically gets, or how long it lasts. The clinical literature on plane pollen is solid; the literature on the hairs is thin.

Prevalence figures for sycamore sensitization vary widely between studies because the populations and the local tree stock vary. A number from Madrid or Monterrey does not transfer cleanly to Ohio.

And the relative contribution of Platanus occidentalis versus Platanus × acerifolia to what people actually breathe in American cities is not well characterized. The two are closely related and cross-react, so from an allergy standpoint the distinction may not matter much. From a tree-selection standpoint, it does.
