Sycamore Tree Types: Three Genera, One Confusing Name

"Sycamore" is not a type of tree. It is a name carried by three unrelated genera, and only one of them has any real claim to it. Before you compare varieties, you need to know which tree you are actually talking about, because the answer changes what you plant, where you put it, and what it will do to your yard twenty years from now.

Three unrelated trees answer to "sycamore"

The name has been lent out twice, and both times for the same superficial reason: a broad, shady leaf that looked vaguely like a fig's. Neither loan has a botanical justification, and both are still causing trouble in nursery catalogs today.

The fig had the name first

"Sycamore" comes through Latin sycomorus from Greek sykomoros, literally "fig-mulberry" (sykon, fig, plus moron, mulberry), possibly reshaped over the Hebrew shiqmah. For most of the word's history it designated exactly one tree: Ficus sycomorus, the African fig that bears its figs directly on the trunk and the thick branches.

This is the tree of Luke 19:4. Zacchaeus could climb it because it has a short trunk and wide, low, spreading limbs, which is a botanical fact doing real work in the text. It is also the wood of Egyptian coffins and the tree the goddess steps out of in the funerary art. What it is not is a landscape option: it is hardy only in USDA zones 9b–12 and dependable from zone 10, so a frost kills it across almost all of the United States. The maple borrowed it around 1500

Acer pseudoplatanus is a maple, and it behaves like one: opposite leaves, five palmate lobes, and paired samaras set at a closed angle of about 60 degrees. When a British or Irish source says "sycamore," this is the tree it means, and the Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian's Wall was one of these, not a plane tree.

It is not native to Britain either. It arrives in the Tudor period, around 1500, with the first record in the wild at Kent in 1632, and it is now on the GB register of non-native species. Controlling it costs roughly £300 per hectare, about double a standard thinning. In cultivation it reaches 40–60 ft (12–18 m) in zones 4–7, and it tolerates salt spray and exposed coastal sites better than any plane tree. The plane tree borrowed it in the early 1800s

The most recent loan is the American one. Early nineteenth-century settlers applied "sycamore" to Platanus occidentalis, again on a loose resemblance of the leaf. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory states the resulting mess plainly in its own species sheet: "The common name 'Sycamore' is used in England to designate a species in the Hard Maple Group (Acer pseudoplatanus), whereas Plane or Planetree is used to name the Platanus which grows there."

The test that never fails: look at how the leaves attach to the twig. Platanus leaves are alternate. Acer leaves are opposite, always. Then check the fruit: seed balls on a stalk mean Platanus, paired winged samaras mean Acer, figs on the trunk mean Ficus. Platanus never produces samaras, and any page that hands the helicopter seed to the American sycamore has copied the error from another page. From here on this page is about Platanus, because that is what "sycamore tree types" means to a North American buyer. Four are sold: three species and one hybrid.

Two columns in that table do most of the work. The seed-ball count is the fastest field test between plane trees, but you have to check several stalks rather than one, because an American sycamore does occasionally carry a double. And anthracnose is the disease that decides whether a plane tree looks good in your climate, which is covered in full on sycamore tree diseases.

American sycamore: the biggest, and the one that needs water

It is the largest deciduous tree of eastern North America and it grows 2–3 ft (60–90 cm) a year, reaching 6 ft (1.8 m) on deep, damp bottomland soil. The unusual part is that it keeps that pace for its whole life rather than only while young, and it lives 200–300 years doing it. The bark in the upper crown is close to pure white, which is how you spot one across a valley in winter.

Its limit is drought, not cold. This is a riverbank tree, and a hot dry summer on a thin suburban lot will scorch it. It is also the most anthracnose-prone of the four, and there is no resistant American sycamore cultivar to fall back on. See the American sycamore profile.

Mexican sycamore: the one for limestone and heat

The selling point is not size, it is chemistry. P. mexicana tolerates the alkaline limestone soil that makes the American sycamore go chlorotic, up to about pH 8.5, and it holds up through a Texas summer once it has three years of establishment watering behind it. Its best-documented advantage, and the one nurseries rarely lead with, is resistance to bacterial leaf scorch, a disease that can kill an American sycamore outright.

California sycamore: the crooked one

If a plane tree has a leaning, twisted or multi-stemmed trunk, you are probably looking at P. racemosa. It is a tree of canyons and seasonal creeks, tolerant of a rainless California summer as long as its roots can reach groundwater, and it lives 150–250 years.

Part of that crooked habit is the species, and part of it is disease. UC IPM rates the California sycamore as highly susceptible to anthracnose and notes that repeated infection makes the tree lose apical dominance for a time, which pushes growth sideways instead of up. The clearest identification mark is the seed balls: 2–7 of them strung along a single stalk, where an American sycamore normally carries one. Full details in the California sycamore profile.

London plane: the street tree, and the slowest of the four

A cross between the American sycamore and the Oriental plane that turned up by chance in the seventeenth century. Oxford, Spain and a London nursery all have a claim to it and the record is not closed, so treat any confident origin story with suspicion. What is certain is that nobody engineered it for pollution: it was found, then planted everywhere because it happened to cope.

And cope it does. New York City alone has more than 80,000 London planes in its streets, roughly 13% of the street tree population and the single most common street tree in the city. It is the only one of the four that tolerates hard pollarding, which is why European cities can keep a 100 ft tree in a 20 ft space. Which one should you plant where you live?

"Which sycamore is best" has no answer, because the four are not competing for the same job. Climate and soil chemistry decide for you, and they decide fairly firmly.

  • A wet eastern site with real acreage: American sycamore. Riverbank, floodplain, damp bottom of a large property, acidic to neutral soil. Give it 40 ft (12 m) from the house, and 60 ft (18 m) if you have clay soil or a basement.
  • Texas and the alkaline southwest: Mexican sycamore. It is the only one of the four built for limestone plus heat plus a dry summer. One honest caveat: it is not anthracnose-proof. Part of the reason it looks clean in central Texas is where it is planted, since anthracnose is only severe when the two weeks after budbreak average below 55 °F (13 °C), and a central Texas March runs warmer than that.
  • California: P. racemosa, and only where it can reach water. It is the native, it belongs in riparian restoration and large gardens, and it will still get anthracnose in a wet spring.
  • A street, a parking strip, a plaza: London plane, with at least 12 ft (3.7 m) of soil between sidewalk and curb. Roots are markedly less destructive when the tree is given real soil volume, and this tree takes pollarding better than any other in the group.
  • Cold, windy, coastal northern Europe: Acer pseudoplatanus, the sycamore maple, which is exactly why Scottish and Irish shelterbelts are full of it. In North America, think carefully first: it is on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List and the Connecticut invasive plant list, and it self-seeds aggressively wherever it naturalizes.
  • A normal suburban lot: none of them. All four plane trees end up 50–100 ft wide. If your yard is small, read sycamores in small gardens before you buy anything.

Cultivars, and what "anthracnose-resistant" actually buys you

Here is the single most repeated error in this niche, and it is worth stating flatly: 'Bloodgood', 'Liberty' and 'Columbia' are London plane cultivars, not American sycamores, whatever the nursery label says. There is no anthracnose-resistant American sycamore cultivar to fall back on. If resistance is what you are shopping for, you are shopping for a London plane, and you should know that.

'Columbia' and 'Liberty' came out of controlled crosses made by Frank Santamour at the US National Arboretum between 1968 and 1970, using Turkish-origin Oriental plane, and were released in August 1984. They were selected for resistance to anthracnose and powdery mildew. Exclamation!™ ('Morton Circle') came later from George Ware at the Morton Arboretum, selected for anthracnose resistance and for frost cracking. 'Bloodgood' is an older cultivar with a reputation for resistance rather than a comparable trial behind it, and it stays smaller, around 60 ft (18 m).

The word to hold onto is partial. None of these is immune, and the resistance travels badly: 'Columbia' performs distinctly worse against anthracnose on the West Coast than it does in the east, and the Pacific Northwest handbook lists both 'Columbia' and 'Yarwood' as susceptible in western Oregon. A cultivar's resistance rating is a claim about a climate as much as about a genotype.

One more cultivar question worth killing off. Platanus is monoecious: every tree carries both male and female flowers, so there is no "female-free" or seedless sycamore and nobody can sell you one that skips the seed balls. The contrast is instructive. Eastern cottonwood is dioecious, which is exactly why cottonless male clones of it exist and are sold. That option does not exist for a plane tree, and any listing offering it is describing something that cannot be.

Four things to check before you buy

  1. Confirm the genus by the fruit, not the label. Seed balls on stalks, paired samaras, or figs on the trunk. Leaf arrangement, alternate versus opposite, settles it in one look.
  2. Check your zone and your soil pH together. Zone alone will mislead you here: an American sycamore is cold-hardy to zone 4 and still fails on alkaline caliche, while a Mexican sycamore thrives on that soil and has a cold hardiness the literature describes as poorly defined.
  3. Measure the distance before you dig. Keep any plane tree 40 ft (12 m) from foundations, 50 ft (15 m) from sewer and drain lines, and never under a power line. The mechanism matters: roots do not shove a sound foundation apart, they dry out clay soil until it settles unevenly, and they enter pipes that were already cracked.   4. For Mexican sycamore, buy vegetatively propagated stock. It hybridizes readily with the American sycamore, both being wind-pollinated and monoecious, so seed collected from a Mexican sycamore growing near American ones has a high chance of producing hybrids.
