How to Harvest and Germinate Sycamore Seeds

American sycamore seed needs no cold stratification, no soaking and no scarification. The whole job is timing and sowing depth: collect the seed balls between midwinter and early spring, when they crumble in your hand instead of bouncing, and sow the seeds on the surface, because they germinate in light and fail under litter.

When to collect: fall is too early
The fruiting heads ripen to brown by September or October, and that is where most collection advice stops — which is why most collection fails. The heads then hang on the tree all winter and only break up the following spring. The USDA Forest Service puts seed dispersal for P. occidentalis at February through May of the spring following ripening.
- Too early (October–December): the ball is hard and tight. It will not rub apart.
- The window (late winter to early spring): the ball has loosened. Roll it between gloved palms and it disintegrates into fluff and seed.
- Too late (late spring): the heads have blown apart on the branch and the seed is gone.
Pick heads straight off low branches; a fallen head that is still intact is fine, one that has been lying wet on soil for weeks is not worth cleaning. Several other jobs land in the same weeks — see the sycamore year, season by season.
Breaking up the head without breathing the fluff
Each head holds hundreds of achenes: single-seeded, dry, about 8–9 mm long, each with a ring of bristles at the base. Those bristles are the parachutes that carry the seed on the wind, and they are what makes this job unpleasant.
The hairs are a mechanical irritant, not an allergen. Air sampling around plane trees picked up airborne, inhalable trichomes described as a respiratory irritant, and the same work found they bound IgE in nobody — so antihistamines do nothing here. What works is not inhaling them: gloves, outdoors or over a bin, a dust mask, and misting the heads or rubbing them inside a paper bag. More in sycamore allergies and irritants.
The method is crude and effective: rub the head apart between gloved hands over a tray, then blow gently across the mix or shake it through a coarse sieve — the seed is heavier than the fluff and separates readily. Stop when the mix is mostly seed. Sycamore seed runs at roughly 200,000 seeds per pound (441,000 per kilo), so a few heads will raise a handful of trees.
Does the float test work? No
The float test is real for acorns and nuts, where a filled seed sinks. It does not transfer. Both USDA accounts of this species describe the seed as buoyant by design: the bristles work as parachutes in the air, and the seed is then carried by water and stranded on mudflats and sandbars, which is where sycamore naturally regenerates. A seed engineered to float will float whether or not anything is inside it.
Use a cut test instead: slice a dozen achenes lengthwise with a craft blade. A filled seed shows a firm pale kernel; an empty one is hollow. The Forest Service is blunt about why that number matters — a large percentage of sound seed germinates, but the count of sound seeds varies enormously between batches, and that is what produces the wild swings in germination. Your problem is almost never dormancy. It is empty seed. Sow several times more than the number of trees you want.
Do sycamore seeds need cold stratification?
No — and this is where most of the internet is wrong. The USDA NRCS plant guide states that "sycamore seeds do not require any pretreatment for good germination." The Forest Service silvics account says it in four words: "pregermination treatments are not required." Two federal sources, no dormancy.
Garden advice prescribes 30, 60 or 90 days of cold-moist stratification anyway, often with a 24-hour soak; we could not verify a requirement for either. And seed collected in the window above has already spent a full winter hanging outdoors on the tree. If a sowing fails, the cut test is where to look, not the fridge.
What the seed does care about is temperature: the NRCS guide gives a working band of 59–86 °F (15–30 °C) and notes germination is poor outside it.
Sowing: light matters more than depth
This is the instruction that decides the outcome. Germination here is epigeal and light-dependent. In Forest Service trials at 73–81 °F (23–27 °C), mean germination was 17.5% under artificial light and only 3.1% in darkness — a fivefold difference from light alone. In the field, seed failed to germinate in river-bottom soils wherever leaf litter was more than two inches deep.
- Surface-sow. Press the seed onto a moist, well-drained seed mix and leave it uncovered, or dust it with the barest skim of grit. Anything you would call a planting depth is too deep.
- Keep it lit. Bright windowsill, greenhouse bench or covered tray outdoors — not a dark cupboard.
- Mist, don't water. A can buries or washes away surface-sown seed. Keep the surface damp and never let it dry; the natural equivalent is a mudflat exposed as spring floodwater drops.
- Outdoors, clear the litter first. Bare, damp mineral soil in full sun, protected from birds. Litter is not mulch here, it is a germination blocker.
Give a batch a month in those conditions before writing it off, and make sure seedlings get direct sun from the moment they emerge — they need it to survive, not merely to thrive.
From seedling to the tree you will actually get
Growth is immediate and startling: first-year seedlings put on 36–48 inches (91–122 cm) in Forest Service records, and the NRCS guide reports up to 10 feet in a season on ideal bottomland, which we treat as the exceptional end. After that the tree adds 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) a year for its whole life — not just while young, which is what separates it from most fast trees. Water deeply and infrequently; shallow daily watering keeps the roots at the surface.
Then the honest warning, because a six-inch seedling in a pot does not communicate it. A mature American sycamore is 75–115 feet (23–35 m) tall with a crown of 65–100 feet (20–30 m). Decide the position before you sow:
- 12 m (40 ft) from house foundations — 18 m (60 ft) on clay soil or with a basement.
- 15 m (50 ft) from sewers, drains and septic systems.
- 6–8 m from sidewalks, driveways and retaining walls, and expect lifted paving anyway.
- Never under overhead power lines.
The usual version of the mechanism is wrong: sycamore roots do not burst sound foundations by pushing. The damage is drying of clay soil, causing differential settlement, and root entry into pipes that were already cracked — see managing sycamore roots near structures. If you get the position wrong, move it early: trunk caliper decides the job, and under 2 inches is a spade and an afternoon. Read transplanting a sycamore first, and note that bare-root stock always moves in early spring, never fall.
If you want a tree and not a project
A year of work gets you a size you can buy for very little. As of July 2026, a state conservation nursery sells one-year bare-root P. occidentalis seedlings, 6–22 inches, at $0.58–$1.17 each in quantity, and retail bare-root at 3–4 feet runs about $24.99 — taller and cheaper than the same species in a 1-gallon pot. One thing still makes seed worth the trouble: at least one major mail-order nursery cannot ship American sycamore into Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii or Oregon under interstate plant quarantine. If you live there and a sycamore grows locally, seed may be your only route.
What about cuttings?
They work, with one large caveat. Slips from young, fast-growing stems root readily, and the Forest Service adds two useful details: wood taken closer to the root collar produced healthier top growth, and fall-planted cuttings outperformed spring-planted ones. Young trees also sprout vigorously from a cut stump, best from late dormant-season (March) cutting — the basis of pollarding and coppicing sycamores. The caveat: cuttings from mature trees cannot be rooted by conventional methods. The old sycamore in the yard cannot be cloned on a windowsill; it takes girdling the living tree and applying rooting hormone before the cutting is taken. A footnote that is more than trivia: in ancient Egypt the sycamore fig (Ficus sycomorus, the third unrelated tree carrying this name) was propagated almost entirely by cutting, because its pollinating wasp was absent or scarce and the trees set little viable seed. Egypt's sycamores were effectively clones, kept going for thousands of years by breaking off a branch and planting it.

We could not verify a storage-life figure in federal seed literature, so we are not publishing one — you will find both "one year" and "up to five years" quoted online, sometimes on the same page. There is a neat way around the question: the tree stores its own seed all winter, in the head, on the branch. Collect it when you are ready to sow it.
