Sycamore Tree Identification: A Six-Step Field Key

Start with one question: are the leaves opposite or alternate? Opposite pairs mean you are holding a maple — Acer pseudoplatanus, the tree the British call sycamore. Alternate leaves mean Platanus, the American sycamore and its relatives. Every other test on this page refines that first answer.
That question matters more than any bark photograph, because "sycamore" is the common name of three unrelated trees, and most identification guides describe only one of them:
- Platanus occidentalis — the American sycamore, a bottomland tree of the eastern United States with camouflage bark and hanging seed balls.
- Acer pseudoplatanus — the sycamore of Britain and Ireland. It is a maple, and it makes helicopter seeds. Read the full sycamore maple profile if that is your tree.

Work down the six steps below in order. Each one narrows the answer, and each one tells you what it cannot settle — which is where most field keys quietly mislead you.

Step 1: Are the leaves opposite or alternate?
Hold a twig and look at where the leaves attach. If they come off the twig in facing pairs, you have Acer pseudoplatanus: a maple with a palmate, five-lobed leaf 7-16 cm across, a deeply heart-shaped base and a petiole of 5-15 cm that is often reddish on young trees. If the leaves are staggered along the twig, you are in Platanus territory.
The Platanus leaf is broad and shallow-cut: 3 to 5 wide, shallow lobes, a coarsely toothed margin, a truncate to heart-shaped base, and a blade 10-23 cm (4-9 inches) wide — normally wider than it is long. It is not a deeply incised, star-shaped leaf. If yours is deeply cut into narrow, pointed lobes, look harder at the leaf arrangement.
Ficus sycomorus is alternate too, but its leaf is simple and unlobed, 3-15 cm long, and the broken petiole bleeds white latex. No Platanus or Acer does that.
What Step 1 cannot do: it will not separate a sycamore from an oak, a birch or a cottonwood, because Platanus, Quercus, Betula and Populus are all alternate. Step 2: Does the base of the leaf stalk swallow the bud?
This is the confirmation test for the whole genus, and almost nobody uses it. Snap a leaf off cleanly and look at where the petiole met the twig. In Platanus the base of the leaf stalk is swollen and hollow, and it sits over the bud like a cap — Virginia Tech's dendrology fact sheet puts it as "petiole bases encircle and enclose the buds." Lift the petiole base and the bud is underneath. After leaf fall, the leaf scar forms a closed ring around the bud, and the stipule scar rings the whole twig.
No maple does this. No oak, birch or cottonwood does this. If the stalk hoods the bud, the tree is a Platanus, full stop.
What Step 2 cannot do: it is a genus character, not a species one. The London plane and the California sycamore have exactly the same hollow petiole. It tells you "this is a Platanus"; it does not tell you "this is an American sycamore." Several pages online sell it as a test for P. occidentalis. It isn't. Move to Step 3.
Step 3: How many seed balls hang from each stalk?
This is the best single discriminator between the Platanus species, and it costs nothing but a look upward.

Check several stalks, not one. An American sycamore does carry the odd double, and a single lucky glance at one paired stalk will send you to the wrong species. Look at four or five and take the pattern, not the exception. The head itself is 2.5-3.5 cm (about an inch) across, packed with hundreds of achenes roughly 8-9 mm long, each with a ring of bristles at the base. It is dense and fibrous, not spongy. It turns brown in autumn, hangs on the tree all winter, and breaks apart in spring — which is why the mess in the yard arrives in March and April rather than October. One thing the balls also tell you: Platanus is monoecious — male and female flowers on the same tree. There is no such thing as a "female-free" cultivar that skips the seed balls. Nurseries sell cottonless cottonwoods because Populus is dioecious; the same trick is impossible here.
Step 4: Is the bark white in the upper crown, or khaki?
Bark is the feature everyone photographs, and it is genuinely useful — as long as you look in the right place. On an American sycamore, the upper trunk and large limbs go almost pure chalk white and smooth, which is why the tree is visible across a winter bottomland from half a mile away. The base of an old trunk goes dark, furrowed and unremarkable, so judging by the bottom two metres will fool you.
The London plane flakes in the same way but the exposed layers run more khaki, olive and grey-cream, rarely reaching that chalk white. Acer pseudoplatanus is different again: smooth grey when young, then flaking in small, irregular plates that expose an orange to red-brown inner layer — a warm palette, never a pale one. Bark also sheds most heavily during the growing season, when the trunk is expanding.
What Step 4 cannot do: "peeling bark" on its own is not a sycamore test in a river bottom. Betula nigra, the river birch, grows in the same wet ground, also exfoliates, and is also conspicuous — but its peel is cinnamon-salmon with pink-orange inner bark, and the tree tops out at 9-18 m rather than 23-35 m. Step 5: Is the underside of the leaf silvery and velvety?
If you are in Texas or the southern Southwest and the leaf underside is a soft, silvery, felted white, you are probably looking at a Mexican sycamore (P. mexicana). Two more marks back it up: the Mexican's leaf margin is entire — smooth-edged — where the American's is coarsely toothed, and the American leaf is broader at the base and often carries one lobe more.
What Step 5 cannot do: it fails on young trees. UF/IFAS notes that the silvery underside develops on trees of about four to six years and older. A nursery whip without it is not necessarily mislabelled — you simply cannot run this test yet. And the seed-ball count from Step 3 does not help here: the Mexican carries 1 or 2 heads per stalk, exactly like the American. Step 6: Are there figs growing straight out of the trunk?
If fruit is emerging from the trunk and the thick old branches rather than from the twigs, you have Ficus sycomorus and you are in the tropics or the frost-free Mediterranean. The habit is called cauliflory, the figs are 2-5 cm across and borne in clusters, the trunk is short with heavily spreading limbs, and any break in the tree bleeds white latex.
This tree is hardy only in USDA zones 9b-12 and dies with frost, so across most of the United States you will meet it in a text rather than a park. That short trunk and wide, low branching is also the botanical footnote to Luke 19:4: it is a fig you can actually climb.
Four tests the internet uses that do not work
The sycamore corner of the web copies itself, and four bad tests have been copied into most of it.
1. "The underside is hairy, so it's a sycamore." False. Platanus occidentalis and Acer pseudoplatanus both have pubescence along the veins beneath — the Woodland Trust even lists it as a "look out for" feature of the maple. A hairy underside separates neither. Use leaf arrangement (Step 1), then the petiole (Step 2).
2. "Sycamores have helicopter seeds." This is the error that started this site. Platanus makes achenes packed into hanging balls and never makes samaras. The winged helicopters are Acer: paired, joined at a narrow angle of about 60°, with wings 2.5-5 cm long, ripening in late summer and falling in autumn. The catch is that a British reader saying "sycamore seeds are helicopters" is right — because their sycamore is a maple. Both statements are true about different trees, and that is the whole confusion in one line.
3. "Buy a female cultivar to avoid the seed balls." They do not exist. Platanus is monoecious. What does exist is a set of London plane cultivars — 'Bloodgood', 'Liberty' and 'Columbia' are London plane, not American sycamore — selected for partial anthracnose resistance, never immunity, and never for a lack of fruit.
4. "Look for the fall colour." There isn't any. The American sycamore goes dull yellow, then brown, then down. If a big lobed tree is glowing orange-red in October, it is not a Platanus. Acer pseudoplatanus, by contrast, does turn yellow, orange and sometimes red.

Size is worth a glance but it is a weak clue: at 23-35 m an American sycamore is the same order as a white oak or a cottonwood. It only rules out the birches. For the whole genus laid out side by side, including the California and Mexican species, see the sycamore species hub.
Identifying a sycamore in each season
Winter is the easiest season, not the hardest. With the leaves gone, the two loudest features are exactly the two that survive: the white upper bark, visible at a distance, and the seed balls, which hang on the bare crown until spring. Up close the twig confirms it — a Platanus twig is stout, distinctly zigzag and orange-brown, carries no true terminal bud, and each lateral bud wears a single cap-like scale inside a leaf scar that rings it completely. A sycamore maple in the same month shows opposite pairs of green, dark-edged buds about 0.5-1 cm long on a round twig with pale lenticels.
Spring is the slowest. Platanus leafs out late, and its flowers open at the same time as the leaves — small, greenish and easy to miss. Anthracnose can delay the flush further and thin the first set of leaves, so a bare sycamore in late spring is common rather than alarming. This is also when last year's seed balls disintegrate.
Summer gives you the full leaf. Blade width, tooth pattern, petiole base and the silvery underside of a Mexican sycamore are all readable. Check the underside for the white stippling of sycamore lace bug while you are there; on a mature tree it is cosmetic.
Autumn is the trap. The absence of colour is itself diagnostic for Platanus, and the new heads brown up and stay put. If helicopters are spinning down, you are under a maple.
