The American Sycamore Tree: Identification, Growth Rate, and Whether It Fits Your Yard

The American sycamore is Platanus occidentalis, the North American plane tree. It is not the British "sycamore" (Acer pseudoplatanus, which is a maple) and not the sycamore fig of the Bible (Ficus sycomorus). It is one of the largest trees in the eastern deciduous forest — and one of the worst trees you can put on an ordinary residential lot. Both things are true at once, and sorting that out is what this page is for.

How to identify an American sycamore in ten seconds
Four features, in the order they become useful as you get closer:
- The bark. The upper trunk and main limbs are close to pure white and smooth; lower down the bark flakes off in irregular plates, leaving a mottled patchwork of cream, gray, olive and brown. In winter the white crown is visible across a whole valley. Detail in the guide to sycamore tree bark.
- The leaf, and above all its arrangement. Leaves are alternate on the twig — that single fact rules out every maple, which are opposite. The blade is 4 to 9 inches (10-23 cm) across, usually wider than long, with 3 to 5 broad shallow lobes, a coarsely toothed margin and a truncate to heart-shaped base. - The petiole. Pull a leaf off and look at the base of the stalk: it is swollen and hollow, and it encircles and encloses next year's bud. This is a genus trait, so it tells you "this is a Platanus", not "this is an American sycamore".
- The fruit, where most of the internet gets it wrong. It carries one seed ball per stalk, occasionally two, about 1 to 1.4 inches (2.5-3.5 cm) across: a dense head of hundreds of achenes, each some 8-9 mm long with a ring of bristles at the base. It does not produce samaras — the helicopter seeds belong to maples. Check several stalks, because the London plane carries 2 (sometimes 3) per stalk, the cleanest field separation between them. How fast does it actually grow, and for how long?
Expect 2 to 3 feet (60-90 cm) of height per year in a normal planting, and up to about 6 feet (1.8 m) a year on deep, moist alluvial soil.
The shape of the curve matters more than the number. The USDA Forest Service describes American sycamore as growing rapidly throughout its life, not just while young: in bottomland forests, only cottonwood and — under some conditions — a few pines, soft maples and black willow outgrow it. Almost every other fast tree slows sharply after twenty or thirty years.
And it does that while living a long time, which is the rarer half of the trick. Mature trees run 75 to 115 feet (23-35 m) in cultivation; the literature range is 60 to 120 feet (18-37 m), with exceptional specimens beyond 150. Lifespan is 200 to 300 years, and individuals past 500 are documented. The usual trade-off for fast growth — brittle wood and a short life, as in silver maple or cottonwood — does not apply here.
The dimension that decides whether you can have one is not the height. It is the crown spread: 65 to 100 feet (20-30 m). Grown in the open, the canopy equals or exceeds the height. That is a circle wider than most suburban lots are deep.
Where it really lives: a river tree standing in your yard
American sycamore is a species of alluvial soils along streams and in bottomlands, appearing only occasionally as a pioneer on drier upland slopes. Almost everything awkward about it in a garden follows from that one fact. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerates a pH band of 4.9 to 7.5 with an optimum from slightly acid to neutral, shrugs off temporary flooding and handles compacted urban soil better than most large hardwoods. What it does not handle is prolonged drought — that, not cold, is its real limit.
A drought-stressed sycamore says so plainly: leaves scorched, brittle and curled to a red-brown, then stress cankers on the branches. The fix is watering deep and infrequent, wetting the whole root zone out past the edge of the canopy. How far from the house? The section that decides
These are the minimums. They are not conservative padding; they are what a 100-foot crown and a shallow, water-seeking root system require.

Now the honest version of why, because "sycamore roots break foundations" is repeated everywhere and is not quite what happens. The roots do not push a sound foundation apart. Two mechanisms do the damage:
- Drying out clay soil. A large tree pulling water from shrink-swell clay makes the ground under one part of the building contract more than under another, and the differential settlement cracks the structure. That is why the clay figure is 60 feet rather than 40.
- Getting into pipes that were already cracked. A riparian tree's roots follow moisture. They do not drill through intact pipe; they find an existing joint or fracture, enter as fine roots and thicken inside. The 50-foot sewer figure exists because the tree is very good at finding those.

Anthracnose: it will happen, and it is not the end
Sycamore anthracnose (Apiognomonia veneta) is the disease every owner meets: reddish-brown lesions running along the leaf veins — not scattered round spots — plus shoot blight and heavy leaf drop in late spring, on a tree that already leafs out late.
It is weather-driven and predictable. The outbreak is severe when the average temperature for the two weeks after budbreak stays below about 55 °F (13 °C), moderate between 55 and 60 °F, and slight above 60 °F. P. occidentalis is markedly more susceptible than the London plane. A hit tree defoliates, looks alarming, and pushes a second flush of leaves in early summer. Disfiguring, rarely fatal.
The fungus overwinters in twig cankers and dead leaf litter, so on a tree far too large to spray the cheap control is sanitation: rake and destroy fallen leaves and twigs, and prune cankered twigs in dormancy. Prune in December and January, in dry weather, disinfecting tools between trees — a schedule set not by the tree's physiology but by canker stain (Ceratocystis platani), which enters fresh wounds, travels on contaminated saws and has no chemical control. Bacterial leaf scorch: the one that can kill it
Bacterial leaf scorch is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, which colonizes the xylem and blocks water movement. The pattern is nothing like anthracnose: leaf margins go olive-green then tan, usually with a reddish-brown band between dead and green tissue; leaves cup, curl upward and stay attached for the rest of the season. It advances from the bottom of the crown upward and inside out, and shows in late summer rather than spring.
There is no cure. Professionally applied systemic antibiotics suppress symptoms temporarily, and pruning out symptomatic branches buys time, but the tree declines over several years and can die of it.
This is the real reason Texas plants a different tree. The best-documented advantage of the Mexican sycamore (Platanus mexicana) is that it is resistant to bacterial leaf scorch — not that it is immune to anthracnose, which it is not. Compared properly in American vs. Mexican sycamore.
The litter, and the thing you cannot buy your way out of
The tree sheds bark plates year-round, very large leaves that are slow to break down, and the seed balls. The timing of the last one surprises people: the fruit ripens brown in autumn, hangs on the tree all winter and disintegrates in spring. The cleanup month is March or April, not October.
When the balls break apart they release the achenes and their bristles. With the fine hairs shed from the leaves, these cause a mechanical irritation of eyes, nose and throat — a foreign-body sensation and coughing, not an immune reaction, which is why antihistamines do nothing for it. And here is what catches buyers out: Platanus occidentalis is monoecious — male and female flowers on the same tree. There are no male and female sycamores, so there is no fruitless cultivar and no "female-free" clone to buy. The contrast with cottonwood is exact: cottonwood is dioecious, which is precisely why cottonless male clones exist and why the same trick is impossible here.
Relatedly, 'Bloodgood', 'Liberty' and 'Columbia' are London plane cultivars (Platanus × acerifolia), not American sycamore. So should you plant one?
Yes, if you have 40 feet of clearance to any building and 50 to any sewer line; if the site is a large open lot, a park, a streambank, a riparian buffer or a restoration planting; if the soil is deep and stays moist, or you can irrigate through a drought; and if you want a tree that will still be standing in two hundred years.
No, if you have a normal suburban lot; if there is shrink-swell clay and a basement; if there is a septic field, a pool or an overhead line anywhere near; if nobody is going to rake in March; or if you were hoping for autumn color — the leaves go a dull yellow and then brown, and that is all they do.

Why it still gets planted anyway
Because on the right site nothing substitutes for it. The bottomland forests where American sycamore grows are among the most valuable wildlife habitat in eastern North America, sheltering wood duck and other waterfowl, upland game birds and deer. As the tree ages it goes hollow, and those cavities serve barred owls, eastern screech-owls and great crested flycatchers; chimney swifts originally nested in hollow sycamores before they moved into chimneys; and cavities in the largest old trees have held black bear dens. Very few landscape trees offer that, and none of the fast ones do.
The wood is a quieter story than the old marketing copy suggests. It is a hardwood, but a moderate one — 770 lbf on the Janka scale, which makes it softer than longleaf pine at 870 lbf, both figures from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory. Its defining property is interlocked grain: growth layers spiral in alternating directions, so the wood resists splitting by nails and screws. That is what made it the traditional choice for butcher blocks, brush and broom handles, food and tobacco boxes, and furniture drawer sides. The American sycamore is a river tree that most people meet in a yard, and nearly every complaint about it traces back to that mismatch. Give it the room and the water it evolved for and it is one of the great trees of the continent, growing fast for two centuries and hollowing out into an apartment block for owls. Put it 15 feet from a foundation on clay and it will slowly, patiently make your problem for you.
