Sycamore Tree vs. London Plane: 6 Key Differences for Urban Landscapes

Both trees belong to the same genus, Platanus, and the fastest way to separate them is to look up at the stalks hanging from the branches and count the seed balls: one per stalk, occasionally two, on the American sycamore; two — sometimes three — on the London plane. Everything else on this page follows from a single fact: the London plane is a hybrid, and the American sycamore is one of its two parents.
Below are the six differences that actually change a planting decision, in the order a person standing in front of the tree would use them.

First, settle which "sycamore" you mean
The comparison only makes sense for one of the three trees that carry this name. Here it is American sycamore, Platanus occidentalis, the North American species with the white crown and the hanging seed balls.
It is not the British "sycamore", which is Acer pseudoplatanus, a maple with opposite leaves and winged helicopter seeds and no relation to a plane tree at all. And it is not the sycamore fig of the Bible and of ancient Egypt, Ficus sycomorus. Difference 1: one is a species, the other is a 17th-century hybrid with two valid names
Platanus occidentalis is a wild North American species of river bottoms and floodplains. It grows where water is, and drought — not cold — is its real limit.
The London plane is a cross between that tree and the Oriental plane, Platanus orientalis. It appeared in the 17th century, but where it appeared is genuinely disputed: the candidates are the Oxford Physic Garden, where an undated manuscript by Jacob Bobart the Younger from the 1660s lists a plane "halfway between the eastern and the western", Spain, and John Tradescant the Younger's nursery at Vauxhall in London. Some sources push the cross back to the 1640s. Anyone who tells you the London plane was created in Oxford in 1670 is closing a record that is not closed.
That dispute is also why you will see two scientific names for the same tree. Platanus × acerifolia and Platanus × hispanica are synonyms, not two different trees — the second one encodes the Spanish-origin hypothesis. We use P. × acerifolia throughout this site. Difference 2: count the seed balls per stalk — this is the test that settles it
This is the one field character that reliably separates the two, and it works from the ground with no equipment.
- American sycamore: normally one seed ball per stalk, occasionally two.
- London plane: two per stalk, sometimes three.
Two cautions that most identification pages skip. First, look at several stalks, not one. American sycamores do produce the occasional paired stalk, and a single unlucky glance will hand you the wrong species. Scan half a dozen across the crown and take the pattern, not the exception. Second, remember what these balls actually are: dense heads of achenes, each roughly 8-9 mm long with a ring of bristles at the base, hundreds to a head. On the American sycamore the head measures about 2.5-3.5 cm (1-1.4 inches). They are not samaras — the winged helicopter seeds belong to maples, including the British "sycamore".
The timing helps too, and it is the same for both trees. The heads ripen brown in autumn, hang on the tree all winter, and break apart or drop in spring. Difference 3: bark — near-white crown, or khaki and olive
Both trees shed bark in irregular plates, which is why the bark alone is a weaker test than most sources claim. The usable difference is colour, and only in the upper part of the tree.
The American sycamore's bark is zoned from the ground up: brown, scaly and loose at the base and lower trunk; a grey-tan-olive-white mosaic through the mid trunk; and smooth, near-pure white or cream on the high branches. That white crown is visible from a long way off across a river valley and is the single most recognisable thing about the species. The London plane keeps more khaki and olive tones in the same upper zone — cleaner-looking at street level, but never that chalky white.
Two things worth correcting while we are here. Looking at bark at eye level tells you almost nothing, because that is exactly where the American sycamore is brown and unremarkable. And the exfoliating bark does not absorb or lock up urban pollution, whatever you have read: soot and particles settle on the surface and are shed to the ground when the plates fall. Difference 4: leaves — a relative difference, not a test
Leaf shape is where identification pages overpromise. On both trees the leaves are alternate, maple-like, with three to five lobes, and on the American sycamore the blade runs 10-23 cm (4-9 inches) wide and is usually wider than long.
The real tendency is that the London plane's sinuses — the notches between the lobes — cut deeper, giving a more sharply divided, more maple-looking leaf, while the American sycamore's lobes are broader and shallower. Treat that as a relative impression across a whole branch, not a diagnostic. Leaves on the same tree vary enormously with light, age and position, and shade leaves in particular will break the rule.
One trait both share, so it cannot separate them: the hollow, swollen petiole base that caps the bud. Snap a leaf off and the base comes away like a little hood over next year's bud. That tells you "this is a Platanus" — it does not tell you which one.
Difference 5: the hybrid is the slower grower, and the smaller tree
This one runs against expectation, and almost nobody says it. The American sycamore is the faster of the two, at roughly 60-90 cm (2-3 feet) a year, and it keeps growing fast throughout its life rather than only when young. On deep, moist alluvial soil it can push considerably harder. The London plane manages about 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) a year.
Mature size follows the same order. The American sycamore reaches 23-35 m (75-115 feet) in cultivation with a crown of 20-30 m (65-100 feet) — in the open, the spread matches or beats the height, and it is the spread, not the height, that decides whether the tree fits your plot. The London plane sits a step below at 21-30 m (70-100 feet) tall and 18-23 m (60-75 feet) across; the old cultivar 'Bloodgood' tops out nearer 18 m. Both are long-lived, in the range of 200-300 years.
So the trade is not "big native versus small hybrid". Both are large trees. The hybrid is simply a slightly smaller, slower, more patient version.
Difference 6: anthracnose and city tolerance — where the hybrid earns its place
Sycamore anthracnose (Apiognomonia veneta) is the disease that decides this comparison. It produces reddish-brown lesions along the leaf veins rather than scattered round spots, overwinters in twig cankers and fallen leaves, and can leave a tree bare and slow to leaf out in spring. It hits P. occidentalis considerably harder than the London plane.
How hard depends on the weather, not the calendar: infection is severe when the mean temperature of the two weeks after budbreak stays below about 55 °F (13 °C), tapers off between 55 and 60 °F, and causes little or nothing above 60 °F. A cool, wet spring is what makes a sycamore look dead in May.
The London plane's advantage here is partial, and it is climate-dependent — it is not immunity. 'Columbia' and 'Liberty' came out of controlled crosses made by Frank Santamour at the US National Arboretum between 1968 and 1970 and released in August 1984, selected for resistance to anthracnose and powdery mildew. But 'Columbia' performs distinctly worse against anthracnose on the West Coast than in the East, and the Pacific Northwest Plant Disease Handbook lists 'Columbia' and 'Yarwood' as susceptible in western Oregon. 'Bloodgood' and 'Liberty' have a reputation for resistance, and in 'Bloodgood's case that is reputation rather than trial data. Buy a London plane expecting fewer bad springs, not none — and plan on the same cheap control either way: rake and destroy fallen leaves, and prune cankered twigs in dormancy. On everything else urban, the hybrid wins comfortably. It tolerates compaction, air pollution, road salt, drought, high soil pH and hard pruning — that last one is the physical reason European cities can pollard it every few years and get a full crown back. It is the most planted street tree in the western world: New York alone has more than 80,000 in its streets, about 13% of the city's street trees, making it the most common street tree in the city. Hardiness runs USDA zones 5-9, against zones 4-9 for the American sycamore, which is the hardier of the two at the cold end.

Which one belongs in a yard, and which on a street
The honest answer for most residential plots is neither, and the reason is spacing rather than species. Keep either tree a minimum of 12 m (40 feet) from house foundations, and stretch that to 18 m (60 feet) for the American sycamore if your soil is clay or you have a basement. Stay 15 m (50 feet) clear of sewers, drains and septic systems, 6-8 m from sidewalks and retaining walls, and do not plant either under overhead power lines: at 30 m tall, no pruning schedule fixes that mistake.
It is worth being precise about the damage, because "the roots break your house" is wrong. Neither tree has a reliable deep taproot — both build wide, strongly branched, shallow root systems that spread beyond the edge of the canopy. Sound foundations are not pushed apart. The two real mechanisms are drying out of clay soil, which causes differential settlement, and roots entering pipes that already had a crack.
Given room, the American sycamore is the better wildlife and shade tree: faster, bigger-crowned, and old trunks hollow out and house raccoons, wood ducks and chimney swifts. Read the American sycamore profile before committing to one.
For streets, plazas and parking islands the London plane is the obvious choice, with one condition: give it soil volume. Street plantings want at least 12 feet (about 3.7 m) of soil between sidewalk and curb — with adequate rooting volume the roots behave markedly better. That is a design decision, not a species trait, and it does not replace the setback distances above.
One shared drawback nobody mentions at the nursery: as the seed heads disintegrate in spring, both trees release trichomes — fine hairs from the leaves and fibres from the achenes — that irritate eyes, nose and airways mechanically. It feels like a foreign body, and antihistamines do not touch it, because it is not an immune reaction. Platanus pollen is a separate and genuine allergen.
Making the call in five minutes
Stand under the tree and work in this order. Find several stalks and count the seed balls — one apiece points to American sycamore, two or three to London plane. Then look at the highest branches: chalky white says American, khaki-olive says hybrid. Use the leaves only to confirm, never to decide. If the tree is bare, the heads still hanging through winter will do the job just as well as they do in July.
And if what you are holding has opposite leaves and winged seeds, stop — that is a maple, and you want a different comparison entirely.
