Sycamore Tree Pests: How to Read the Damage and When to Treat

Most insect damage on a sycamore is cosmetic, and a single insect causes most of it: the sycamore lace bug. It feeds on the underside of the leaf, so the symptom you see on top is nowhere near the animal causing it. That one fact settles most sycamore pest diagnoses, and almost nobody says it plainly.

This page covers the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the London plane (Platanus × acerifolia) — the two trees Americans mean when they say "sycamore." The British sycamore is Acer pseudoplatanus, a maple, and it carries a different problem list. If you are not certain which tree you own, start with the three unrelated trees called sycamore. The damage is on top, the insect is underneath

Sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata) feeds from the lower leaf surface, draining cells one at a time. What you see from a lawn chair is pale white to silvery stippling on the upper side, starting near the veins. As the season runs on, that stippling merges into a yellow or bronzed leaf, and the tree can shed foliage early.

The confirmation is on the back of the leaf. Turn one over and look for tiny dark brown to black varnish spots — lace bug excrement — along with the insects themselves. Adults are about an eighth of an inch long, pale, with lace-patterned wings; the nymphs are darker and wingless. UF/IFAS notes that sycamore lace bug is the only lace bug known to feed on sycamore in the East, so if the spotting and the excrement are both there, you are done diagnosing. In California, a second species, the western sycamore lace bug (C. confraterna), does the same job.

There are multiple generations per year in the South, which is why populations peak late and the tree looks worst in August and September rather than in June. That timing is also the reason treatment rarely pays: by the time damage is obvious, premature leaf drop may be only a few weeks ahead of normal autumn leaf drop anyway. UF/IFAS is explicit that healthy sycamores tolerate annual lace bug infestations, and that chemical control is typically not warranted — partly because it knocks out the assassin bugs, spiders and lacewings already working the tree for free. The honest caveat, from the same source: several consecutive years of severe lace bug damage, stacked on top of other stress, can kill a tree.

UC IPM adds a practical note worth repeating: when you sample leaves, take ones still attached to the tree. Fresh, partly damaged foliage shows the clearest symptoms and is far more likely to still hold the live pest.

Sycamore tussock moth: the caterpillar not to pick up

In late summer, hairy caterpillars turn up on sycamore foliage — pale yellow bodies under dense hair, with tufts of long orange and white hairs at both ends. This is the sycamore tussock moth (Halysidota harrisii). Young larvae feed together on the underside and skeletonize the leaf; older ones eat everything but the major veins.

Treat this one accurately, because the internet gets the emphasis backwards. The damage to the tree is not the problem. Late-season defoliation lands after a healthy tree has already banked its carbohydrates for the year, and trees carry more leaves than they strictly need. Control is generally neither needed nor recommended.

The problem is your skin. University of Maine Extension is blunt about tussock caterpillars as a group: the hairs cause a very itchy rash, they are a prickly defensive structure rather than venom, and children react more than adults while also being far more likely to pick the caterpillars up. Some tussock rashes fade in a couple of hours; others, from related species, are worse and worth a doctor's visit. The practical rule for a garden with a sycamore in it: look, photograph, do not handle, and tell children the same. Nothing you spray on an eighty-foot canopy will change how many caterpillars end up on the patio furniture.

The sticky car in the driveway: honeydew and sooty mold

The complaint that brings most people to this page is not a chewed leaf — it is a black film on the car, the deck and the garden table. That film is sooty mold, and it is a symptom rather than a tree disease. Sap-feeding insects excrete honeydew, a sugary waste that rains down and coats whatever is below; the mold then grows on the sugar, not on the tree or on your paintwork. Remove the sugar source or wash the surface, and the black goes away.

On sycamore the usual culprits are aphids. UF/IFAS records the pattern on Mexican sycamore in exactly these terms: little real damage to the tree, but honeydew leading to sooty mold that blackens foliage. It resolves on its own most years, helped along by the same predators a broad-spectrum spray would kill.

West of the Rockies there is a heavier hitter. Sycamore scale (Stomacoccus platani) is, in UC IPM's words, the most damaging insect pest of sycamores in California. It attacks California sycamore, Oriental plane and London plane, and is reportedly not a pest of American sycamore. At about a sixteenth of an inch it is recognized by its damage rather than by the insect: small distorted leaves, yellow or white spots on the blade that brown as the tissue dies, brown spotting on petioles, and on young trees an abnormal flaking of smooth bark that can be mistaken for normal shedding.

Sycamore scale carries a timing trap that makes most treatment futile. Sprays only work at bud break, before any damage is visible; once the leaves expand, coverage of petioles and leaf undersides is poor and many scales have moved to less susceptible stages. In other words, by the time you have a reason to act, you have missed the window — and you are deciding for next year, not this one.

Mites, and the reason not to spray on reflex

Spider mites (Oligonychus platani on western sycamores) can cause leaf drop from midsummer onward. Unlike lace bugs, you look for these on the upper leaf surface: tiny dark green to reddish-brown specks that move. Mites thrive in hot, dry, dusty conditions, which is why they show up first on trees along a driveway or a dirt road, and why hosing dust off the foliage genuinely helps.

Mites also carry the strongest argument in this whole article against casual insecticide use. Mite outbreaks frequently follow an insecticide application: the spray removes the predatory mites and insects holding the population down, and some products appear to stimulate mite reproduction outright. Spraying a sycamore for a cosmetic lace bug problem is a reasonable way to acquire a real mite problem.

Borers are a symptom, not the cause

If you find boring insects in a sycamore, the useful question is not "how do I kill them" but "what weakened this tree." Most wood borers are secondary invaders: extension entomologists describe them as attacking plants already stressed by drought, recent transplanting, repeated defoliation, sunscald or mechanical injury from mowers and string trimmers. Newly planted trees are the exception that matters — in their first three years a small trunk can be girdled outright.

The sycamore's own specialist is mild by comparison. The sycamore borer (Synanthedon resplendens), a clearwing moth of the southwestern United States, feeds under the bark and pushes granular excrement pellets out into the bark crevices and around the base of the trunk. Its galleries are largely confined to bark tissue with minimal effect on the vascular system; UC IPM records that sycamores tolerate extensive boring by this insect and that no control is generally recommended. It is also the usual reason a California sycamore develops rough bark — those frass pellets are what separate it from sycamore scale, which produces none.

Three things blamed on pests that are not pests

  • The spring itch. When the seed balls break apart in spring, fibers from the achenes and hairs from the leaves become airborne. Air sampling around plane trees found these trichomes inhalable and irritating, but binding no IgE — the irritation is mechanical, not allergic, which is precisely why antihistamines do nothing for it.   • Peeling bark. Shedding is what this tree does, and it does more of it during the growing season, when the trunk is expanding. See sycamore tree bark for what normal looks like.   • Leaf drop. A sycamore sheds leaves for half a dozen unrelated reasons, most of them not insects. Why your sycamore is dropping leaves works through them in order.

What treatment is actually proportionate

Be honest about the object you are treating. A mature American sycamore stands 75–115 ft (23–35 m) with a crown of 65–100 ft (20–30 m). Foliar control of a lace bug means wetting the underside of every leaf in that canopy. Thorough spraying of a tree that size requires commercial high-pressure equipment and, in UC IPM's phrasing, usually means hiring a professional applicator. For a problem that is cosmetic in most years, that is not a proportionate response — it is an expensive one with collateral damage attached.

So the sensible split is by tree size, not by pest:

  • Young and nursery-sized trees are where intervention is both reachable and defensible. They have less stored reserve and a canopy you can actually cover.
  • Mature trees get cultural care and patience. If injury has genuinely been severe for several consecutive years, insecticide tree injections have reduced lace bug damage in trials — but weigh that against UC IPM's warning that injections and implants physically wound the tree and can mechanically spread the canker stain fungus, which has no cure. Ask an arborist to make that call in front of the tree.

Whatever you use, follow the product label and your state extension service; regional registrations differ, and no page should be giving you a rate.

The one preventive measure that reliably works

Water. The sycamore is a bottomland tree, and prolonged drought is its real limit, not cold. A sycamore that is not water-stressed shrugs off nearly everything on this page; a sycamore under drought stress is the one that borers find and the one that accumulates damage year on year.

Water deeply and infrequently, wetting the whole root zone out past the edge of the canopy. Shallow daily watering trains roots to stay near the surface, which is the opposite of what you want. The signature of a tree that is not getting it: leaves scorched, brittle and curled to a reddish brown, along with stress cankers on the branches.

Three more things worth doing, and one worth not doing:

  • Keep mowers and string trimmers away from the trunk. A mulch ring instead of turf removes the single most common source of the wounds borers use.
  • Hose dust off low foliage in hot, dry spells to keep mites down.
  • Leave the predators alone. Assassin bugs, lacewings, spiders and lady beetles are doing unpaid work in that canopy.
  • Do not fertilize a struggling sycamore as a substitute for watering it. Nitrogen pushes soft new growth; it does not fix a dry root zone.
