Pollarding and Coppicing Sycamore Trees: How They Differ From Topping

Pollarding, coppicing and topping are three different cuts, and only two of them are pruning systems. Pollarding takes the crown off above browsing height and rebuilds it from a permanent head. Coppicing cuts the stems off at ground level and lets the stump send up new ones. Topping is a tree beheaded somewhere in the middle with no plan for what comes next, and professional arboriculture treats it as damage rather than management.

Which sycamore you have decides which of these is even relevant. The pollarded street trees of London, Paris and Madrid are almost always London plane (Platanus × acerifolia) — if you are not sure which of the two you are looking at, the sycamore versus London plane comparison separates them. The tree coppiced in British woodland and hedgerow is Acer pseudoplatanus, the sycamore maple, which is a maple and not a plane at all. American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is rarely put on either system, mostly because of where it gets planted rather than because it objects.

Pollarding: a head you build, then keep

The point of the original pollard was livestock. Coppiced stools get eaten: cattle, deer and horses browse the young shoots off at ground level and the stool never gets away. Cut above their reach and the same regrowth is out of range, so a pollard let a farmer take a repeating crop of poles from a tree standing in a grazed field. That is the whole logic of the height, and it is why "above browsing height" describes a pollard better than any number in feet. Street pollards sit higher still, because the clearance being protected is traffic rather than cattle.

The first cut removes the young crown at the chosen point. Shoots break from just below it, and every later cut is made back to the same place. Over decades the repeated wounding and callusing builds the characteristic swollen head, and that is the detail that matters: every cut after the first one goes through shoot-sized wood into tissue that has already healed over many times. The wounds stay small. The tree is never asked to seal a foot-wide face.

Coppicing: cutting to the ground on purpose

Coppicing goes the other way and takes everything off near ground level, leaving the stool to throw a flush of straight stems. It is the older of the two systems in Britain and the one that produced firewood, fencing, hurdles and charcoal for centuries. Acer pseudoplatanus coppices readily, which is one reason it spread so successfully after arriving around 1500: cut it, and it comes back.

Two practical warnings. The regrowth is soft, sweet and at exactly the height deer and rabbits feed, so a coppiced stool in open country needs protecting or it will never become anything. And the stool itself is permanent and low; in an ornamental setting you are trading a tree for a recurring thicket, which is a different object entirely.

Topping is not "pollarding my tree", and this is the difference that matters

Almost everyone who tops a tree believes they are doing something traditional. They are not, and the reason is mechanical rather than aesthetic.

  • Wound size. A pollard cut goes through small wood at a point the tree has sealed before. A topping cut goes through mature, large-diameter branches. A tree does not heal a wound, it walls it off, and it can only wall off what it has the resources to enclose. Big cuts in old wood leave columns of decay running down inside the branch.
  • Anchorage of the regrowth. Both cuts produce a rush of shoots, but the shoots are not equivalent. Those on a pollard head arise from a structure the tree has spent years building. Those on a topped stub arise from the outer growth layers of wood that is already decaying beneath them, so they grow fast, get heavy, and sit on a rotting base. Ten or fifteen years after a topping is when limbs start coming out of trees in storms.
  • Stress. Removing most of a mature crown at once strips away the leaf area feeding a root system sized for a whole tree, and exposes bark that has spent its life in shade to direct sun. Sunscald and dieback follow.

So the honest version is this: pollarding is a commitment entered into with a young tree. It is not a technique you can apply to a large mature sycamore to make it smaller. Doing that to a mature tree is topping, whatever it says on the invoice.

When to cut: December and January, dry, and no wound sealant

The pruning window for a sycamore or a plane is December and January, in dry weather, disinfecting the tool between one tree and the next. The reason is not the tree's physiology. It is plane canker (Ceratocystis platani), which enters through fresh wounds and travels between trees on contaminated saws. There is no chemical control for it, so the calendar and the hygiene are the entire strategy.

The same logic bans wound sealant outright on these trees. A contaminated brush moves canker spores from tree to tree more efficiently than a saw does, so painting a cut is worse than leaving it open. How well sycamores take it, and the age limit nobody mentions

Platanus resprouts vigorously from cut wood, and that physical fact, not tradition, is why European cities pollard planes and keep doing it. Acer pseudoplatanus responds just as strongly from a cut or browsed base, which is why the species is a woodland coppice tree and why the Sycamore Gap stump put out shoots after the tree was felled in September 2023. That regrowth is coppice regrowth: unplanned, but the same biological response.

There is a limit, and it is the part left out of most accounts. The ability of Acer pseudoplatanus to resprout from the base falls off sharply after about 40 to 50 years, with a practical ceiling somewhere around 80 to 100. Set that against a species that lives 150 to 200 years and the consequence is uncomfortable: a sycamore maple can be healthy, mid-life and structurally sound, and still be past the age at which cutting it to a stool produces anything. Age decides this, not vigour. Cut a hundred-year-old sycamore to the ground expecting a coppice and you may simply have killed it.

Once you start, you do not get to stop

A pollard is a maintenance contract with a tree. The shoots on the head keep thickening, and if they are left they become branches: branches carried on a knuckle that was never structured for branch-sized loads, at a union made of old wound tissue. A lapsed pollard is one of the more dangerous objects in an urban tree population, and restoring one is specialist work, because the limbs cannot simply be taken off in one go without reproducing the starvation and decay of a topping.

Say it plainly, because it is the mistake the technique invites. Pollarding is not a way to make a big tree small and then forget about it. It is a way to keep a tree permanently small at the price of coming back to it forever, and it does not transfer with the house: the next owner inherits the cycle whether they know it or not. It belongs with everything else in looking after a sycamore, only far less forgiving of a missed year.

Where these systems still earn their place

  • Street and avenue trees. Clearance under wires and over traffic, on a schedule somebody actually keeps.
  • Formal gardens and courtyards. Pleached and pollarded planes are a deliberate architectural effect.
  • Pole and rod production. The original job: straight, uniform, renewable material off a stool.
  • Size control on a well-sited tree. Started young and kept up, on a tree that was not already doomed by its planting position.

When the answer is no

Three cases where neither system is the right call. A mature tree that has never been cut this way: starting now is topping, not pollarding. A tree in poor health: severe pruning removes the leaf area it needs to recover, and every wound is an entry point for a canker with no chemical control available. And the most common case of all, "I planted it where it does not fit". A sycamore's mature crown is measured in tens of metres, and no cutting cycle changes the fact that the roots and the setback distances are still those of a large tree.
