Is Sycamore Good Firewood? Heat, Splitting and Seasoning

Yes, sycamore is usable firewood. It sits in the lower-middle of the heat tables, but heat is not its weakness. American sycamore gives about 19.5 million BTU per cord, within two percent of green ash. Its real problem is that it fights the axe.

One thing has to be settled first, because it changes the answer: "sycamore" is three unrelated trees. In the United States it means Platanus occidentalis, the American sycamore. In Britain and Ireland it means Acer pseudoplatanus, which is a maple and a better firewood. Ficus sycomorus, the sycamore fig of Egypt, survives only in USDA zones 9b to 12 and will never reach a northern woodpile. How much heat does a cord of sycamore actually give you?

Utah State University Extension's firewood table puts American sycamore at 19.5 million BTU per cord, dry weight 2,808 pounds. Published tables cluster between 19 and 20 million, so treat that as the range. Here is where it lands:

Now the number that reframes the question. USU expresses heat content as a percentage of green ash, its benchmark firewood, and sycamore scores 98%. It carries essentially the same heat as a wood the same table rates "Excellent" — yet sycamore's overall rating is only "Good", and the University of Missouri Extension rates it lower still, "Fair". Nothing in the heat column explains that gap. Splitting and water do.

Why sycamore is famous for being unsplittable

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory technical sheet on Platanus occidentalis says it in one line: the wood "resists splitting due to interlocked grain". Interlocked grain means the fibers spiral around the trunk in alternating directions from one growth layer to the next, instead of running parallel to the axis. A maul drives a wedge along a continuous plane of fibers. In sycamore there is no continuous plane, so the wedge has to tear fibers on every layer it crosses.

The result is the one everyone describes: the maul bounces, and the rounds that do open come apart in stringy, hinged pieces still joined across the split. USU marks ease of splitting "Difficult"; Missouri does the same and groups sycamore with blackgum and elm, the other two hardwoods with that reputation. A hydraulic splitter is the standard answer among people who cut it in quantity, which is why a free sycamore is not really free: it costs you the machine or the afternoon.

One caveat about advice you will find everywhere. Many sites tell you to split sycamore green, on the theory that it opens more easily before it dries. We could not find that claim in any extension or forest-products source, and interlocked grain is a structural fact about how the tree laid its fibers down: it does not reorganize as the wood dries. Split it early because it needs the drying time, not because the maul will have an easier day.

How long does sycamore take to season?

Longer than the oak stacked next to it, and the reason is measurable. USDA Wood Handbook figures, tabulated by Penn State Extension, give freshly cut American sycamore a moisture content of 114% in the heartwood and 130% in the sapwood, an average of 122%. A green sycamore log holds more weight in water than in wood. White oak averages 71%, sugar maple 69%, and the average across that whole hardwood table is 82%. Among common eastern hardwoods only cottonwood and water tupelo come in wetter.

The cord weights show the same thing. USU lists a cord of green sycamore at 5,096 pounds and the identical cord dry at 2,808: about 2,290 pounds of water per cord that has to leave before the wood burns properly. Missouri Extension's entire remark on sycamore is "too much water when green".

Missouri's guidance is a full summer at minimum after cutting to length, and at least a year for dense hardwoods. Since sycamore starts with roughly half again as much water as oak, plan on a full twelve months, split and stacked: off the ground, sides open to the wind, top covered. Rounds left whole in a heap will not be ready in that time. The target is under 20% moisture content, which is what extension publications mean by air-dried.

Does sycamore smoke, spark or cause creosote?

Sparks: no. USU rates sycamore "Few" and Missouri rates it "No", which makes it a safe choice for an open fireplace, where a thrown ember is what matters. Both tables flag eastern redcedar and Osage-orange instead.

Smoke: medium, and seasoning decides it. Both tables put sycamore's smoke at medium or moderate, and USU gives the mechanism: "Green wood also produces more smoke and creosote … than dry wood." Creosote is not a property sycamore has. It is what any wood produces when the fire spends its energy boiling water instead of burning volatile gases hot. At 122% green moisture content, sycamore has more water to boil off than almost anything else you are likely to cut, so burning it early punishes you harder than green oak would.

Coals: better than its reputation. USU rates sycamore's coaling "Good": it will hold a bed of embers. The usual verdict online blames its poor overnight performance on bad coaling, and the extension data does not support that.

What sycamore is genuinely good for

A firebox holds a volume, not a number of BTUs. Fill it with sycamore and you have loaded roughly two thirds of the energy the same box of white oak would carry. That, and not the coaling, is why it is not an overnight wood: there is simply less fuel in the same space. Where it does earn its place:

  • Daytime and evening fires, when you are there to reload.
  • Shoulder season. April and October, when a white oak load overheats the room and you want a fire that gives out and goes out.
  • Outdoor fire pits and chimineas, where the low spark rating helps and the moderate smoke matters far less.
  • Mixed loads. Two splits of sycamore under one of oak light faster than three of oak.
  • Small rounds you never split. Anything under about four inches goes on the fire as it is, which sidesteps the only real objection to this wood.

The honest rule: if a sycamore is already down on your property, burn it. Do not pay oak prices for it, and do not choose it over oak at the same price per cord, because you would be buying a third less heat and a great deal more work. British "sycamore" is a different tree, and it is better firewood

This is where nearly every firewood article goes wrong, and it goes wrong in both directions. The Forest Products Laboratory states it directly: "The common name 'Sycamore' is used in England to designate a species in the Hard Maple Group (Acer pseudoplatanus), whereas Plane or Planetree is used to name the Platanus which grows there." Three consequences for anyone with a saw.

It is denser, so it holds more heat per cord. The Forest Products Laboratory gives Platanus occidentalis a specific gravity of 0.49 at 12% moisture, about 31 pounds per cubic foot. Acer pseudoplatanus is published at 0.48 to 0.62, near 38 pounds per cubic foot. USU's rule is that "denser or heavier wood contains more heat per volume", which places British sycamore between silver maple (19.0 million BTU) and hard maple (25.5). Treat that as an inference from density, not a measured cord figure: no extension table we found lists Acer pseudoplatanus.

It splits. Interlocked grain is a Platanus trait. European sycamore is described in the timber literature as typically straight grained, which is why it is the traditional wood for violin backs and kitchenware. The maul problem does not transfer.

Its own literature rates it well. Trees and Shrubs Online calls sycamore timber "hard and strong but easily worked, with many uses including as good firewood". A British reader warned off sycamore by an American page is being warned about a different tree.

One caution belongs to the maple, not the plane: what is documented about Acer pseudoplatanus toxicity concerns horses eating its seeds and seedlings, which contain hypoglycin A.
